New: Authorities arrest hit-and-run driver for crash near Apollo High School

GLENDALE, AZ – Police have arrested the person they believe fled the scene after hitting a teen boy riding a bicycle near N 47th Ave and W Northern Ave on Thursday, according to 12 News.

Joshua Holbert, 27, was allegedly driving an SUV with an American flag on it when he hit the 13-year-old victim as he was crossing the street with friends on his bicycle around 7:30 p.m.

Following the collision, a bystander stopped and rendered aid to the teen until rescue crews showed up. Crews airlifted the victim to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Authorities discovered Holbert’s SUV at an apartment complex. They spotted the American flag in the backseat. They also noted damage to the front of the vehicle. They had the SUV towed as evidence.

Police entered Holbert’s apartment but found it empty.

Officials held a press conference on Friday urging the community to assist in identifying the hit-and-run driver. Holbert saw the press conference and turned himself in on Saturday.

Holbert informed police he was driving when he hit the teen. He said he was alone in the vehicle and left the scene without rendering aid before returning to his apartment.
