News: 1 killed, 5 injured in Benson crash after driver evades police

BENSON, AZ – One person was killed and five people injured in a crash on Highway 90 after a driver evaded police on Thursday afternoon.

ABC15 News reports Cochise County deputies were attempting to stop a Ford Expedition that was traveling on Davis Road near milepost 18 around 1 p.m. The driver not only failed to stop but sped away at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

After deputies issued an “attempt to locate” on the vehicle it was located traveling north at high rates of speed on Highway 90 around 3 p.m. Local authorities deployed a tire deflation device just before I-10.

An SUV was attempting to turn left onto Whetstone Commerce Dr. when the Expedition crashed into it.

A male passenger in the Expedition was pronounced dead at the crash scene. Local authorities report he was trapped inside the Expedition.

The Expedition driver was airlifted to a Tuscon hospital for serious injuries.

Two other passengers in the Expedition sustained unknown injuries. Cochise County Sheriff’s Office reports they were both undocumented immigrants.

Local authorities report two people in the SUV sustained unknown injuries.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
