News Update: Maricopa PD IDs people in deadly wrong-way crash

MARICOPA, AZ – On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Maricopa police released the names of the two people in connection with a deadly wrong-way crash on SR 347 that happened last Friday, Sept. 19.

According to new information from AZ Family, police identified the two as 55-year-old José Jesus Muñoz and 61-year-old Masoumeh Hemati.

Preliminary details show that Hemati was driving north on southbound SR 347 when she crashed head-on into a pickup truck driven by Muñoz. Photos reveal that both vehicles were significantly damaged. Muñoz’s pickup truck landed head-first into a grassy ditch.

The force of the crash led Muñoz to suffer fatal injuries and Hemati to suffer critical, life-threatening injuries.

Hemati is continuing to recover from her injuries.

Law enforcement is working to piece together the exact cause of the crash and has not said impairment was a factor in the crash. The Pinal County Vehicular Crimes Unit is coordinating investigation efforts with the Maricopa police.
