PHOENIX, AZ – Arizona Department of Public Safety suspects impairment was a factor behind a multi-car collision that sent several people to the hospital on Wednesday.
The incident happened before 8:30 p.m. on Interstate 17 South near Indian School Road, Arizona Family said. Troopers said a vehicle with a flat tire stopped in an HOV lane, which resulted in a chain-reaction crash involving several injuries.
DPS said they believe the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.
EMS crews transported the suspected DUI driver, who suffered serious injuries, and several others, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, to a hospital for treatment.
Officials shut down the southbound lanes for several hours for clean-up and investigation purposes before reopening the area at 3 a.m. on Thursday. Northbound traffic was unaffected, DPS said.
A full investigation is underway.
