News: Suspect arrested in connection with hit-and-run that injured Mariachi drummer

TEMPE, AZ – Local police arrested a 23-year-old male suspect on Wednesday for his involvement in a hit-and-run crash that injured a Mariachi drummer earlier this month.

According to Arizona Family, police arrested the suspect, Nathaniel McKean, at his home in Scottsdale and booked him on charges of aggravated assault causing serious injury and leaving the scene of an accident with injury. His bond is set at $150,000.

The Back Story

The collision happened on Friday, Oct. 9, in Tempe. Court paperwork revealed that around midnight, a Tempe police officer saw McKean driving the wrong way on McClintock Drive near Palmcroft Drive.

McKean crashed his Tesla Model 3 into 33-year-old Adan Alcala, a drummer for a Los Angeles-based rock mariachi and comedy band.

Alcala suffered several bone fractures in his arm, shoulder, and spine, as well as internal organ injuries.

After striking Alcala with his Tesla, McKean continued driving south on northbound McClintock and then reportedly crashed into a light pole.

An hour after the crash, police found an abandoned vehicle with damage consistent with a driver crashing into a pedestrian and also found a matching mirror at the scene.

Police also found a coffee cup with the name “Nate” on it as well as business cards belonging to McKean and “evidence of inhalant usage,” suggesting he was impaired.

Several days after the crash, on Monday, Oct. 19, police received an anonymous tip that McKean was the driver and was drinking prior to the hit-and-run crash.

Police also interviewed two witnesses who said McKean also fell asleep while driving and struck an unknown item.
