News: Districted driving was factor in Phoenix crash that killed 4-year-old boy, AZ DPS says

PHOENIX, AZ – Distracted driving was a factor behind a collision that killed a 4-year-old boy and injured a 2-year-old toddler on Monday, the Arizona Department of Public Safety confirmed.

This comes as an update in connection with our previous reporting. DPS told AZFamily that the person who exhibited distracted driving will be released and issued a long-form complaint. This is a document that lists allegations of a possible crime and tends to be more detailed than a traffic citation.

DPS said a person driving a Dodge Challenger was distracted when they rear-ended a Toyota Corolla on Interstate 10 East off 43rd Avenue. The Corolla then rear-ended a Chrysler Pacifica.

The 4-year-old boy inside the Corolla was rushed to a hospital, where he unfortunately later died. The boy’s brother, a 2-year-old boy, was seriously injured, while the boys’ mother, the Corolla driver, was uninjured.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will be determining whether the Dodge driver will or will not face charges.

A full investigation is underway.
