PHOENIX, AZ – A 30-year-old woman who is being accused of manslaughter charges in relation to a crash that killed her 9-year-old daughter has since been detained by ICE, Fox10Phoenix reports.
This comes as an update following two stories we covered about this particular collision. The 30-year-old woman, later identified as Brenda Liliana Rivera Estrada, said she is a Mexican citizen who came to the U.S. 17 years ago and overstayed her 30-day visit.
The Back Story: The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 12. Riveria Estrada was driving on I-17 North and driving dangerously while trying to overtake several vehicles. As she tried to pass multiple vehicles, her car overturned.
Riviera Estrada’s 9-year-old daughter was sharing a seatbelt with another sibling and was ejected from the vehicle. She died, while her three other siblings, an 11-year-old boy, a 3-year-old boy, and a 1-year-old girl, survived.
EMS took the three surviving children and Riviera Estrada to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. She was booked into jail on charges of manslaughter and child abuse.
Arizona Department of Public Safety detected a smell of marijuana coming from Riviera Estrada’s car, and she later admitted to being under the influence at a court hearing.
She will go through several immigration proceedings, and may continue to remain in custody depending on the outcomes of those hearings.
