PHOENIX, AZ – Arizona Department of Public Safety arrested a 30-year-old woman in connection with a fatal rollover crash on I-17 that killed her own daughter on Sunday, April 12.
DPS identified the woman as Brenda Liliana Rivera Estrada, from Phoenix, according to Fox10Phoenix.
The collision happened around 7:30 a.m. on the northbound lanes. Riviera Estrada crashed her vehicle, which caused it to overturn. Riviera Estrada’s 9-year-old daughter was sharing a seatbelt with one of her siblings and was ejected from the vehicle.
The 9-year-old girl died from her injuries at the scene. Her three other siblings — an 11-year-old boy, a 3-year-old boy, and a 1-year-old girl — along with Rivera Estrada were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Rivera Estrada was later released from the hospital and booked into jail. Law enforcement is accusing her of child abuse and manslaughter. She is being held on a $100,000 bond.
In a court hearing, officials said Riveria Estrada confessed to being under the influence of marijuana at the time of the collision. Eyewitnesses also claimed she was driving at the speed limit of 65 mph.
Officials did not disclose the physical conditions of the surviving children, but said the state has concerns about their welfare.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
