News: Woman, 18, loses life to wrong-way crash on I-17 in Phoenix

PHOENIX, AZ – An 18-year-old woman lost her life to a wrong-way crash that happened on I-17 South near 16th Street Wednesday.

KTAR said the 18-year-old woman was driving north on I-17 South when she struck a pickup truck head-on. She died from her injuries at the scene, while the male pickup truck driver suffered serious injuries. Arizona Department of Public Safety and EMS crews responded to the scene before 3:30 a.m. Upon arrival, ambulance crews transported the surviving driver to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Authorities shut down I-17 South near Durango Street and reopened the area around 7:30 a.m.

Officials are working to determine whether the young woman was impaired while she was operating her vehicle.
