News: Hit-and-run driver strikes, kills pedestrian in Camelback Marketplace

PHOENIX, AZ – According to 12 News, a hit-and-run driver fatally collided with a man near N 16th St and E Camelback Rd on Saturday.

Travis Smith, 24, was allegedly driving south on N 16th St when he ran a red light and collided with a westbound car driven by Dillon Mares, 29, around 12:30 a.m. Mares died in the wreck.

Following the collision, Smith fled the area on foot and left his vehicle at the scene.

Smith contacted authorities and informed them he was the driver who hit Mares.

Authorities arrested Smith and took him to an area hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the collision. Officers then booked him in the Maricopa County Jail on charges of manslaughter and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death or a serious injury.

The Phoenix Police Department is investigating the incident.
