News: Goodyear officer cleared of wrong-doing in fatal crash

GOODYEAR, AZ – An investigation by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office determined a Goodyear Police officer did not demonstrate any negligence in a crash that took the life of a man at N Estrella Pkwy and Fillmore St on Oct. 22, according to 12 News.

Jacob Vela, 38, was riding a motorcycle north on N Estrella Pkwy when he collided with a Goodyear police vehicle that had entered the intersection. The officer was responding to an assault in a progress call.

First responders transported Vela and the officer to an area hospital where Vela died. The officer had minor injuries.

The investigation also found the officer did not violate any of Goodyear Police’s policies.

The Vela family has retained an attorney and is exploring legal action against Goodyear.
