GLENDALE, AZ – Law enforcement arrested a 20-year-old man on Wednesday, August 19, in connection with his role in two separate crashes that resulted in injuries and one fatality.
According to AZFamily, the 20-year-old man, Ali Thoban Alebadi, is expected to face a murder charge and an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge.
The Backstory
The incident unfolded around 7:30 a.m. on March 22. Alebadi was seen exiting Loop 101 and going onto Glendale Avenue and lost control of his vehicle while making a right turn from the off-ramp.
Alebadi continued driving into the Westgate Entertainment District, caught off traffic, made wide turns, and ran at least eight red lights before going into oncoming traffic.
Police tried to pull over Alebadi near 57th Avenue, and he refused to cooperate and continued driving. A police officer initiated a pursuit, which ended when they crashed into a 2023 Toyota Tacoma at an intersection.
Alebadi continued traveling at a high rate of speed on Glendale Avenue and crashed into a Nissan Sentra.
The impact of the two crashes left the Toyota Tacoma driver and police officer injured, while the Nissan Sentra passenger died. The Toyota driver suffered serious injuries, and the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The police officer and Alebadi were hospitalized. Alebadi was treated at the hospital for a broken leg and later released.
Alebadi had a BAC level of 0.141, which is twice the legal limit of 0.08, and did not have a valid driver’s license while operating a vehicle.
Alebadi fled the country to avoid arrest, but was later found in Glendale.
The source said it’s unclear where Alebadi fled to, but he does have connections in Mexico and Iraq, and is scheduled to appear in court next Thursday, August 27.
