AVONDALE, AZ – Avondale police believe impairment was a contributing factor behind a two-SUV collision that happened in the Rancho Santa Fe area on Sunday.
The crash occurred before 3:30 a.m. in the area of Dysart Road and Encanto Boulevard, AZ Family reports. Police believe the driver of a northbound SUV made an unsafe left turn onto Encanto when they collided with a southbound SUV.
The impact of the collision caused the SUV driver to slam into a block wall and an HOV sign, which trapped the driver inside.
The driver of the southbound SUV and the northbound SUV were both suspected of impairment and injured.
The driver of the southbound SUV was freed from their vehicle by fire rescue crews. Then, EMS personnel transported them and their passengers to a local hospital. Officials did not specify their injuries, but said they are expected to be in stable condition.
The driver of the northbound SUV sustained minor injuries and did not have to go to a hospital.
Police said charges will be determined depending on the results of the investigation.
Officials closed southbound Dysart Road temporarily before reopening all lanes.
