News: Authorities arrest driver for fatal hit-and-run near Village Meadows

PHOENIX, AZ – Authorities have arrested a driver for a fatal hit-and-run collision that happened at I-17 and Union Hills Dr on Jan. 24, according to CBS 5.

Marc David Distel, 29, was driving a 2013 Lincoln MKZ north on I-17 when he crashed into the back of a Kawasaki motorcycle operated by Eleazar Valdez, Jr., 18, at 90 mph around 7:30 p.m. The impact pinned the motorcycle to the front of the Lincoln. Another vehicle hit Valdez after he fell off the motorcycle in the middle of I-17.

Rescue crews transported Valdez to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Distel eventually pulled over to the shoulder about a quarter of a mile past the crash site. He then left the area.

Distel called the Arizona Department of Public Safety the next day. A trooper came to the Motel 6 at 2330 W Bell Rd. Distel told the trooper he was on multiple medications while driving the car. The trooper apprehended Distel and charged him with manslaughter and leaving the scene of a deadly crash.
