PHOENIX, AZ – A wrong-way driver was responsible for causing a fatal multi-vehicle crash that happened on Loop 202 Red Mountain Monday.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety told AZ Family that the collision happened around midnight. Troopers said the driver of a Subaru SUV was traveling east on westbound Loop 202 when they sideswiped a Hyundai vehicle and crashed head-on into a Kia sedan.
The impact of the crash caused the Subaru SUV to overturn and the Kia to slam into a concrete wall.
The Kia driver succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while the Subaru driver was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries.
Troopers were not able to confirm what physical condition the Hyundai driver was left in since they fled the scene of the crash prior to their arrival.
Troopers suspect the Subaru driver was impaired.
Officials shut down Loop 202 West along Priest Drive and asked drivers to go through Sky Harbor Boulevard. Authorities reopened the area by 6:30 a.m.
The Kia driver’s identity has not been disclosed.
