PHOENIX, AZ – Phoenix police said impairment was a contributing factor behind a deadly crash on Thursday.
Fox10Phoenix said the incident unfolded after 11:30 p.m. when Phoenix police pulled over a suspected impaired driver. The driver, later identified as 40-year-old Ruben Almanza, fled the scene of the traffic stop after speaking with officers for several minutes.
Several minutes later, Almanza crashed his car into another vehicle.
Almanza and the other driver, 35-year-old Melvina Jones, were transported to a hospital, where both of them later died.
Officials shut down the area for several hours before reopening all lanes.
