News: Alleged impaired driver in jail after fatal T-bone crash in West Phoenix

WEST PHOENIX, AZ – A 19-year-old man, who was suspected of driving while impaired, was sent to the Maricopa County Jail after causing a fatal T-bone crash on Sunday.

AZ Family said the collision occurred in the area of North 67th Avenue and West Virginia Avenue. The 19-year-old man was driving 79mph in a 40 mph zone without his headlights when he crashed his white Chevrolet Silverado into a red Nissan Sentra.

The 19-year-old man, Andy Lepe, was reportedly going north on 67th Avenue when he collided with the Nissan turning left onto Virginia Avenue. Camera footage revealed he did not use his headlights while driving.

The driver of the red Nissan Sentra was also speeding, going 55 mph when he attempted to turn. He died from his injuries at the scene and has since been identified as 38-year-old Juan Andres Ortiz.

Ortiz had a female passenger, who sustained a fractured rib and appears to be in serious condition.

The 19-year-old man was identified as Andy Lepe. Lepe was subjected to a field sobriety test and did not pass. His results showed that his blood alcohol concentration level was at 0.157, which is double the legal limit of 0.08 for drivers 21 and older.

Lepe also admitted that he drank four or five beers at a friend’s house prior to driving. He faces charges of manslaughter, aggravated assault, and endangerment. His bond was set to $150,000.
